The Trauma Treatment Program

The trauma treatment programs at Two Rivers Hospital provide specialized focus and care for the survivors of post-traumatic stress, trauma (childhood or adult onset), neglect and abuse. Intensive psychotherapy is used for stabilization of depression, dissociative disorders, anxiety and addictions, as well as to identify and provide resolution for the cycles of self destructive behaviors, dissociation and difficulties with relationships and intimacy. The program also facilitates the resolution of long term developmental deficits and blocks manifested as personality disorders.

Patients receive a whole day of treatment services within the structure of a safe and trusting therapeutic community. Out goal is to provide a respectful, safe and empowering environment in which survivors can pursue the work of healing.

The Philosophy

We are dedicated to providing a safe, non-revictimizing, healthy environment to allow individuals to heal from developmental wounds. Each individual is treated with respect and compassion in an intensive, state-of-the-art format that effectively combines psychotherapy and pharmacology within a therapeutic community.

How are these programs unique?

  • We specialize in the treatment of self-injury and focus on stabilization of emotions and behaviors which are out of control.
  • We focus on both addictive-compulsive processes and the primary issues surrounding family dynamics and abuse.
  • We provide individual psychotherapy by clinicians trained and experienced in our philosophy of treatment, which is provided within the context of a multidisciplinary and highly collaborative treatment team.
  • We provide medical and pharmacological management of post-traumatic stress and dissociation in non-traditional ways.
  • We provide a nurturing and safe “sanctuary” milieu that is comfortable and private from patients who are not seeking this type of care.
  • We assess and treat dissociative processes as part of a treatment plan designed to bridge fragmentation, thus reducing risk of relapse.
  • We attempt to integrate and resolve past memories of abuse so the individual feels greater freedom in the present to control emotions, solve problems and relate to others. We help the individual contextualize memories so they become part of a bigger picture.

Focus of Trauma-Based Treatment

Some individuals require specialized, intensive inpatient treatment when outpatient stabilization programs have been unsuccessful in containing self-destructive symptoms. The Treatment Program for Trauma-Based Disorders offers seven-days-a -week, specialized and targeted treatment provided within a safe, supportive environment. Our multidisciplinary treatment team has more than 10 years experience with more than 2000 clients from around the country and abroad in stabilization of a broad spectrum of trauma-related symptoms, including depression, anxiety, compulsive behavior, dissociation, somatic distress, self-injury, and chronic relational distress. The program addresses eating disorders, self-mutilating behavior, chemical dependency, and sexual compulsivity. A full continuum of care, including intensive day hospital and inpatient stabilization, allows the treatment to be offered within a step-down, cost-effective framework.

The program is driven by a strong one-to-one relationship with the primary therapist, who provides intensive individual psychotherapy. Expressive psychotherapies, including psychodrama, are utilized as a means of facilitating the focused expression of strong emotion. Psychoeducational modules address primary recovery skills such as impulse management, interpersonal and problem-solving skills, creating safety and decreasing crisis-generating and maladaptive trauma-based thinking and behavior. Containment groups then allow clients to identify the interfering-behavior cycles that keep them from benefiting from therapy.

Finally, trauma groups allows clients to share their individualized treatment gains and struggles with group therapist support.

Common Presenting Problems

Sometimes the impact of developmental trauma surfaces in the form of extreme anxiety, cycles of depression, pervasive fear, self-blame and a inability to trust (self and others). Additionally, the client may feels fragmented, separated or different from others. Frequently, there is a feeling of unfillable emptiness inside, as if one were an impostor, and as time goes on, individuals may find themselves participating in increasingly destructive behavior to provide a connection and to break the numbness. These "coping" behaviors include:

  • Alcohol and drug misuse or abuse
  • Self-cutting or intentional infliction of pain on the body
  • Involvement in abusive relationships
  • Compulsive self-degrading sexual behavior or inhibition of sexual responses
  • Stealing or other dangerous behavior

Trauma Program

Clients with personality disorder experience strong, impulsive, out-of-control or over-controlled emotions. Anger is externalized or self-directed destructively. Typically, interpersonal relationships have conflict and the individual has difficulty dealing with daily stresses and self-soothing. The result is often suicidal feelings or dangerous, uncontrolled behavior.

Eating Disorders Program

The Eating Disorders Program is designed to promote improvements in balanced living. Patients will be allowed the opportunity to examine attitudes underlying the eating disorder symptoms and to resolve underlying psychological conflicts. The individual is guided and supported in developing healthy relationships with food, body, self, and others based on empowerment, self-responsibility, and emotional safety. Our approach to treatment recognizes that restoration of nutritional well being and healthy eating patterns are most effective in a supportive and respectful atmosphere. Our program addresses the underlying conflicts and emotions that maintain the eating disorder, while supporting the patient in developing symptom control and the power to make healthy life choices.
