When an individual directly or vicariously experiences an
event so sudden, overwhelming and alarming that it inundates
their coping capacities, a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can
result. Often, the individual may not be immediately aware of
the impact of the event - initially all efforts may be
directed toward simply surviving the circumstances at hand. In
the days, weeks and months following the occurrence, the
person may begin to be aware of:
-
Intrusive recollections
or re-experiencing of the trauma
-
Heightened anxiety
-
Numbness as going
"through the motions" without feeling truly present or
connected to ones surroundings
-
Avoidance of places,
situations or people reminiscent of those in which whom the
event occurred
-
Detachment from
interpersonal relationships
-
A constrained sense of
future possibilities
