Trauma

The Two Rivers National Center for Trauma-Based Disorders provides specialized treatment for individuals suffering from the effects of abuse, traumatic grief, and trauma, as well as acute and chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  These individuals may also be chemically dependent or have a coexisting psychiatric disorder which contributed to chronic relapses and an inability to maintain recovery after completing more traditional treatment programs.

Philosophy

The Trauma-Based Disorders Program provides multi-disciplined and individualized treatment in a safe and secure environment.  The treatment focus is a balanced approach of validation and compassion for the trauma survivor’s experience along with the belief that each person can heal from individual trauma and lead an empowered and fulfilling life.

The program utilizes group and individual therapies as well as psycho-pharmacological interventions, and a strong emphasis on creating a therapeutic and structured milieu to focus on healing in a safe and compassionate community of survivors.  Groups are held from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm, daily.  Individual therapy is provided 3 times, weekly.

Treatment

The therapeutic approaches of the Trauma-Based Disorders Program vary according to individual needs; however, a Trauma Stabilization Group is provided for all patients upon admission.  This group teaches skills that facilitate emotional regulation, grounding, distress tolerance, relaxation, and safety.  Patients are also assisted in accessing internal resources and strengths which allow completing recovery in a safe and empowering manner.

A Trauma Resolution Group is offered for those patients who have attained some level of stabilization and need to work directly on a particular aspect of their trauma or grief.  The goal of this group is for the survivor to process traumatic events in order to reduce and restructure core beliefs related to the trauma.

Other Groups Include:

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to teach emotional regulation tools and distress tolerance

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help restructure negative and destructive thinking patterns

Trauma and Addictions Program (TAP) to help understand and manage dysfunctional coping mechanisms including substance abuse, eating disorders, sexual addiction and acting out, self-harm behaviors, and any other behavior interfering with healthy functioning

Psychodrama Group to utilize role play to help release feelings related to unresolved issues from the past

Art Therapy to assist with identification and healthy expression of feelings

Topics Groups to include psycho-education and discussion of a variety of topics including boundaries, grief, shame, anger management, self-esteem, body image, and sexual and relational healing

The Two Rivers Trauma-based Disorders Program includes acute inpatient care and a partial day program that patients can attend while integrating back into society.
